On May 21, 2007 the FDA issued a safety alert for Avandia. (Rosiglitazone maleate)

Avandia®
Avandia is manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline for type 2 diabetes. It was first approved for use in 1999. Since then more than 6 million people worldwide have taken this drug. Avandia helps sensitize the body to insulin and helps control blood sugar. According to a recent study by the New England Journal of Medicine, patients taking Avandia have a 43% higher rate of heart attacks. There was also a significant increase in the risk of heart related deaths. In fact, GlaxoSmithKline(GSK) studies submitted to the FDA in August 2006 show some increased risks for this drug.

Consult A Doctor On Medical Issue
The Steinberg law firm does not intend, by this web site or otherwise, to dissuade anyone from taking medication without their doctors' approval. Please consult your doctor, not your lawyer, on matters relating to your health. It could be dangerous to stop taking medicines, especially abruptly. Patients should talk to their physicians to decide whether the benefits and risks of taking Avandia make it the right choice for them.
